As a parent and an
educator
with more than 30 years experience in both the public and private
sector, I know that our students must be prepared to meet the many
challenges which lay ahead of them. Students must have the basics,
including reading, writing and mathematics, but they also need the
skills necessary to thrive in the 21st century. These skills include
expertise in technology, problem-solving, and critical thinking. These
attributes will be necessary whether the student is entering college
after high school, or starting a career. I strongly support career
vocational education, as well as extremely high quality academic
courses. During my first term on the school board I worked to implement
the John Swett Careers Academy, which continues to expand and improve
each year.
The most effective governing boards are those composed of thoughtful individuals who listen to all input, and give parents, teachers, staff, and the community a seat at the table where important decisions are made.
As a school board member, I am part of a team that decides issues that affect the lives and well-being of approximately 1700 students, as well as all district employes. I spend many hours preparing for each meeting, so I'll have a basic knowledge of the issues on the agenda. I've learned to defend my positions with facts, and to consider all of the information, rules, policies, and the law when making decisions. I listen to all perspectives, striving to be open-minded when others express their (sometimes opposing) opinions, weigh the facts and vote my conscience. I have always considered myself to be an independent thinker; I do not let pressure from others determine my vote. When I disagree with others, I attempt to see things from their perspective, and no matter how emotional the issue may be, I never let friendship leave my voice. I believe I serve for the right reasons, and govern for the common good.
For nearly 12 years I have been your voice on the school board, listening to your input and asking the tough questions. I look forward to continuing my efforts to improve and enhance the quality of education for all of our students, to increase their test scores, to balance our budget, to be closely involved with the renovation and reconstruction of our lovely, historical John Swett High school, and to strongly support the ongoing maintenance, modernization, and beautification of our other campuses.
I respectfully ask for your vote on November 6th.
